The new book that I continue to write and illustrate is about the search for genuine truth. The story brings back several beloved characters from my previous books and continues to evolve. At the moment, I am calling this book-in-progress, Moonlight Merry Go Round.

As the new season slowly reveals itself in Vermont, I thought this would be a good time to give a progress update on the new book I have been working on. I have been very encouraged and grateful for the current, renewed interest in my first book, Moonlight of Morgan Hill, and fans should know that another illustrated storybook is underway.

Here is a sneak-peak illustration that begins to show the story that will unfold in the new book. As my community continues to recover from recent flooding and winter’s blanketing snows, I will continue to pour my imagination into this new book! I know my readers will appreciate its story.

My 200 plus year old farm and land suffered greatly in the flood. However, thanks to the farmers who knew where to place the farmhouse many years ago, the waters did not reach the first floor.

I am so blessed to be working every morning with two horses at the inspiring location of Morgan Hill Farm in Weston, Vermont. These incredible creatures have once again sparked my imagination to start work on a new book for children. I am happily writing and illustrating this new adventure.

My new Morgan Hill friends, Latté and Reade, are involved in a mystery merry-go-round ride of learning trust and truth among friends, and answering the question of why these two principles are so very important to everyone. I hope you will join us on this adventure, as brand new friends and old friends from previous books join in this discovery.

Hopefully, the new book will appear in the Fall, if my work on Morgan Hill Farm and on my gardens doesn’t totally overtake the work in my studio on this book! Stay tuned because I will be posting some illustrations from the book along the way.

Years ago, while cleaning out a drawer in my old family farmhouse, I found a small book entitled The Greatest Thing in the World by Henry Drummond that was published in 1887. In his book, he describes a gentleman as a man, “who always does things gently, with love.” Inspired by that statement, I wrote my second book, Max of Morgan Hill. The book is about a one-eyed pony named Max and a wise, old owl named Mr. Woo. Young Max is helped on his journey to becoming a gentleman by wise Mr. Woo.

A good dad or father figure is a priceless gem in the lives of both girls and boys, but especially boys at this time in history when I believe boys and men are being marginalized. May God bless all the men who take on the important work of mentoring boys and demonstrating to girls what and who is a gentleman.

But earlier in 2021, while listening to the radio, I became aware of a stunning moment in the history of our commitment to the 20-year war in Afghanistan. An Afghani woman who had escaped her country, thanks to the bravery of American soldiers risking their lives to bring her out safely, took the time at the end of her grateful speech to them to speak directly to the families of Americans whose sons and daughters had been maimed or died in the past in this war. She assured them that their losses, although grave and heartbreaking, had not been in vain. She implored them to remember that what they and their loved ones had sacrificed brought light to millions of people in her country, especially women and girls who had been immersed in darkness with no hope for so long. She entreated Americans to remember that the spark of light, which those brave men and women kindled, will never be extinguished. She described how their unselfish commitment and example had brought hope to a whole generation of children who were born in Afghanistan during the past years. She is positive that this gift will help bring her country out of darkness in the future.

That Afghani woman’s story touched my heart and I felt deep empathy and love for her and the other Afghani families impacted. Because of these recent historical events, The Well Spring Tree has proven to be a timely book. It deals with the topic of love for all people and focuses on the deep friendship of an American soldier and an Afghani interpreter. The Well Spring Tree, written for children 7 and up, expresses the idea that all religions have at their core the spiritual understanding of God as love. 

Should you wish to take action and help Afghans who are in trouble, I suggest supporting the vital work of The Nazarene Fund. Thanks to The Nazarene Fund, which was very instrumental in the endeavor to extricate people from Afghanistan, this woman and many others have escaped since the ill-fated evacuation in August of 2021. This amazing group has helped millions of people escape tyranny of all kinds all over the world, as well as Afghanistan. About My New Book

The Well Spring Tree was born many years ago on a frosty late December day. As my son and I were leaving a small shop in our tiny town in Connecticut where an older lady sold Christmas trees, my son remarked that he felt sorry that the trees which had been passed over would not be going to a cozy home to celebrate a loving family’s holiday. We both agreed that sometime we should write a story about how a left over tree eventually finds a happy home. For many years I thought about the story and did some simple illustrations but it was not until recently that I finally put it all together.

In January of 2020, while helping little children master skiing at a local ski area, I became very sick with something quite peculiar. I assumed it was just a flu and I took a few days off to get over a high fever but then went back to work. Many of my co-workers were experiencing the fever, cough, shortness of breath and fatigue that I was experiencing but we kept on working. Now we have learned that being in the fresh air and sun on the mountain was probably the best place to be. I feel profoundly blessed to have had no idea what this was and, consequently, I had no fear. When work at the mountain stopped in March because of the pandemic, I once again focused on my long untouched story.

From the Bible we learn about Goliath of Garth and how a brave young David defeats the giant that everyone fears with his simple slingshot and one small stone (Sam, 1:17). Thinking about the fear surrounding this pandemic that was so prevalent in the world and my little story, it seemed timely to focus away from fear and to celebrate the strength, courage and perseverance of all who face adversity in their lives, no matter what form it takes. The giant Goliath of fear can be daunting but we must be strong in truth and our faith. As the Bible teaches, by trusting in God and his son Jesus Christ we can defeat fear of anything with the simple truths of love, courage, faith, and strength which David’s small pebble symbolizes. With confidence in God’s guidance and love, overcoming adversity leads to a brave and joy-filled life.

I hope this new book adequately conveys this hopeful message to children everywhere!
